The Story of Frank Galasso

by Frank Galasso

Frankie Galasso is a nationally recognized sports cartoonist. In 1987, he made his start with the Evening Times of Pawtucket, RI. His work later found it’s way onto the Editorial pages of The Providence Journal. His editorial and sports cartoons have been picked up by more than 36 self syndicated and free-lance newspapers.

In 1999, Frankie became the regularly featured sports cartoonist for the Providence Journal. He created his first lithograph “Memories of McCoy” for the Pawtucket Red Sox. Frankie was commissioned by the 1999 Calder Cup Champion Providence Bruins. He was the first to ever capture the History of The Rhode Island Reds Hockey Team, a non-funded venture of his own. The success of the lithograph resulted in the birth of what is today - The Rhode Island Reds Heritage Society, 600 members strong.

Rocky Point Ceremony Unlocks Memories of the Beloved Amusement Park

by Noel P. Roby

Rocky Point Park has an amazing run as RI's most beloved amusement park.  On Saturday, the public got to view the space it once occupied.

Massive traffic down Warwick Neck Rd. Kids, parents, even grandparents all headed in the same direction with a similar skip in their step. Baby strollers, police on ATV’s, food vendors, political candidates, and a palpable excitement in the air. Sounds like a typical scene that surrounds a popular amusement park. You would think that Saturday’s activities were the result of an amusement park that was open and thriving in business.

Not even close. Rocky Point Park in Warwick has been closed since 1995. Yet, this past Saturday October 25th, people flocked to Rocky Point Ave in ridiculous numbers. Living in North Kingstown, this trip should have taken me about 25 minutes on an average Saturday. My trip took roughly 1 hour and 30 minutes. Warwick Police did a really nice job with traffic control once folks got close to the park entrance. There was plenty of parking inside the abandoned park. I have to commend the operations people for the way they laid out the vendors - especially the food vendors and musical tent. Food vendors supplied favorites included those Rocky Point staples - kettle corn, shaved ice, cotton candy and cotton apples, clamcakes and chowder - along with more modern fancies such as lattes and espressos. The Nightlife Orchestra, led by Warwick native Mark Bedrossian , played to a very spirited crowd.

America's Most Featured Sports and Entertainment Cartoonist

The Real Frank Galasso

Interview by Noel P. Roby

Frankie, thanks for meeting with me. Tell me in your words how you describe yourself.

“I’m a cartoonist. Simple right? I’m one of a few remaining sports cartoonists and illustrators from the heyday of newspapers. Newspapers used to be where people got their news, first and foremost. So, the cartoonist played an important role in telling a story and delivering the news in a creative way. Our job was to get the reader’s attention, to make them laugh, and to get them interested to read further.”

“Dumb and Dumber To” Movie

Local cartoonist Frankie Galasso creates lithograph which becomes

“Memories Of Rocky Point” Postcard for “Dumb and Dumber To”

Cranston, RI: Frankie Galasso, nationally syndicated and award winning cartoonist, is the artist responsible for the postcard featured in the upcoming movie “Dumb and Dumber To.” This beautiful postcard features some of the legendary buildings and rides that made Rocky Point Park one of the most beloved amusement parks in the country. The images are drawn in cartoon form in the style that has made Frankie Galasso one of the most beloved cartoonists of his era.

Galasso was approached by Jay Floyd, the clearance administrator of the movie’s production team in August of 2013.  Floyd asked to use Galasso’s famous “Rocky Point” lithograph, drawn some 14 years ago, and “to use the image for an on set ‘prop’ by the production company.” The lithograph is entitled “Iconic Memories of Rocky Point”. This Rocky Point postcard in “Dumb and Dumber To” represents a critical moment in the movie. It announces to the main characters, played by Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels, a major announcement that sets the two friends into motion and thus, into the hilarious antics and comedy that have made this comedy duo so popular.
