If you grew in North Kingstown in the 1980's, as I did, Sue Henseler most definitely had an impact on your life. Mrs Henseler was an active and important member of several local organizations (North Kingstown Town Council and school committee member) as well as on the state level. She was a teacher and devoted family member. I grew up playing sports with and against her son Tim. I remember her tireless dedication to the North Kingstown Soccer Association and all the hard work she put in to make youth soccer grow and grow in the town. Soccer is quite possibly the most popular sport in North Kingstown and has been for decades now. Sue Henseler had as much to do with its success as anyone I know.

I recently got a Facebook event invite from a friend, Keith O'Brien. His wife, Kim Norton O'Brien (www.nortonobriendesign.com) also sent me some information recently about a race in beautiful Wickford Harbor. Having kayaked in the harbor for many years, I can tell you honestly it is a fantastic activity, for all ages. You really get to see Wickford in a very different manner than just walking or cycling through town. The Kayak Centre has rentals available and is conveniently located in Wickford, near the Hussey Bridge. Here is some information about an event coming up in August:

Summer's coming...and in Rhode Island that means our love affair with the ocean is back in full swing. On Saturday, August 1, I hope you'll spend an exciting morning on the water with me for a great cause at the Suzanne M. Henseler Foundation Kayak and Paddleboard Race in historic Wickford Harbor. As a participant last year and a race organizer this year, I'm super excited about the race and the philanthropy it supports. The race offers divisions for single kayak, double kayak, SUP and prone with two race distances to accommodate recreational and elite paddlers. The course winds its way through Wickford Harbor, starting and finishing at the boat ramp in Wilson Park. Race proceeds benefit the Suzanne M. Henseler Foundation which provides scholarships and unique learning opportunities to students throughout Rhode Island. Registration is now open. Check out the race website for all the race details and I'll see you on the water on August 1! Please forward and help me spread the word - and make sure you like us on Facebook for race news and updates.
