Blogging for Business - A Brief History

A blog is one of the most effective ways of marketing your business without a pushy sales pitch. Writing a blog is not about discount coupons or the sale of the century. Rather, blog writing is about why you are a leading expert in your area of business. Blogs tell the story of your expertise. By letting a wide range of readers know you know your stuff, you are establishing yourself as a resource in your field. There are search engine optimization (SEO) benefits as well, but we will cover those in another post. Let's focus on why blog writing is important first.

Here is an example. If you are a personal trainer and are looking to increase your client base, a blog is a great way to get your name out to the public. You can write a blog about a certain exercise that helps reduce weight or a strength training exercise that benefits running. Include industry terminology to prove you know the proper lingo and so your readers know that you are the one to go to for physical fitness advice. Somewhere in your blog, include your business information and a hook to get them to contact you about your expertise in fitness training. One other thing to note, write a blog a few times per week, especially in the beginning. Having a stale or inactive blog is worse than having no blog content at all.

Blog writing should be enjoyable. You are on no deadline and most likely you will not have an editor screaming at you for content. Write about what you like, what you know the most about. If you need help with grammar or editing, ask someone in your business or office who has experience in that field.
